Street Art

Hotel Capannelle Appia Antica, part of the Roman Hotels Group, is the first hotel in the world to be considered a true open-air art gallery. A space that welcomes and inspires both locals and travellers with a powerful invitation: move, break free, and be happy.

The Roman Hotels Group is the first commissioner in the world of monumental artworks created by internationally renowned street artists. On the exterior façades of Hotel Capannelle Appia Antica, New Yorker Andrew Pisacane, aka Gaia, brought his artwork “Mobility” to life.

This young talent, named by Forbes as one of the most influential American artists under 30, chose to depict the historical figure of Spartacus, a universal symbol of freedom, through his mural cycle. The artwork conveys a message of freedom, movement, and happiness.

On the eastern wall, Spartacus appears wearing the unmistakable Thracian helmet, his feet firmly planted on the ground, one barefoot, the other shod, symbolizing two states of the same condition and a constant drive toward movement.
Two marble groups highlight, on one side, his incompleteness, and on the other, the deposition from the cross, while the broken chains become an eternal symbol of liberation.

On the western wall, a man seen from behind gazes up at the blue sky. A famous painting is reinterpreted: the original protagonist, W. Goethe, has been removed, leaving an eloquent void among the Roman ruins. Next to him, the sculpted head of Appius Claudius watches over the aqueduct he commissioned, unfinished, yet still standing against the passage of time.
